For owners of closely held businesses

If something happened to you tomorrow, what happens to the business?

Your estate documents may say one thing. Your operating agreement, buy-sell agreement and insurance may say another. Take a short checkup to see what looks clear, what needs review, and what you still need to find out.

  • No documents to upload
  • No contact information required for your result
  • No legal advice or document drafting
Your Business + Estate ReviewSample result
Looks clear · Ownership

Your estate documents and business agreements were reviewed together recently.

Needs review · Buy-sell funding

The business has grown a lot since the insurance behind your agreement was bought.

Unknown · Incapacity

You’re not sure who could legally make business decisions if you couldn’t.

Then: three questions for your team and a list of documents to find.
Why gaps happen

Three sets of documents. Different authors. Years apart.

Your attorney wrote the estate plan. A different attorney wrote the operating agreement when you formed the company. An insurance agent sized the policies years ago. Nobody’s job was to make them agree.

The checkup looks at the overlap, where one document assumes something another one never says.

Your estate attorneySigned 2017
Business agreementsOperating · shareholder · buy-sell

InsuranceLife · disability · key person
An insurance agentSized 2015
Where they disagree
  • The will leaves shares to a trust the operating agreement doesn’t allow
  • The buy-sell says $3M; the insurance behind it pays $1.5M
  • The power of attorney never mentions the business

Before you start

Is the checkup really free?

Yes. You see your full result on screen without giving an email address. Emailing it to yourself is optional.

Will this replace my attorney or CPA?

No. We don’t draft documents or give legal or tax advice. The checkup gives you better questions to bring to them, and we coordinate with them if you want help.

Do you sell insurance?

Greg doesn’t. When a gap needs insurance, we refer you to a licensed insurance professional and check the numbers against your documents.

What does it cost to work with you?

The checkup and the first conversation are about whether there’s a gap worth fixing. How Morrowgate is paid is set out in its Form ADV and client agreement, and Greg will walk you through it before you decide anything.

Who is this for?

Owners of closely held businesses, usually where the company is most of the family’s net worth: solo owners, partners and family businesses anywhere in the U.S. We meet by video, and in person around Rochester, NY.

Five minutes to see where you stand
